How To Vote With Your Travel Dollars

Written by 2 Travel Dads

Voting With Your Dollars: How Travel Can Influence Progressive Politics

Following the recent shocking election of Donald Trump in the United States, our minds are spinning out of control of what to do. We cannot relocate our lives and run away from this. We can’t secede from the Union (or can we?) and we can’t just sit at home moping about so many of our countrymen showing their true colors. But we can start today on making the future better and brighter for progressive events that are yet to come. How? By voting with our dollars! Our travel dollars, more specifically. Voting with your dollars is not a new concept, but it’s not something everybody thinks about.

Here are some ways that you can spend the next few seasons or years voting with your dollars and supporting the states that are trying to drive our country forward. Oh, and America is already great, so this is just one more way to keep that and work on fixing what’s broken. READ MORE

Travel Tales: Ink Credible in Hong Kong

Posted by Shane Smith, Editor, Stonewall Gazette

"Sometimes in life you travel to places for a larger reason, unbeknownst to you. It was on one such trip that I finally satisfied a long-held desire to get a tattoo," writes Uwern Jong.

5 Questions You Can Only Ask A Gay Tour Guide When You Are in Paris

Written by Shane Smith, Editor, Stonewall Gazette

When travelling abroad for the first time it's very important to know as much as you can about the destination before you leave. Paris, France is one of the most visited places on the planet but how gay-friendly is it?

The Gay Locals has an informative article, "5 Questions You Can Only Ask A Gay Tour Guide" and it offers some solid tips for the newbie traveller. A very good example would be the areas to avoid. The Gay Locals explains, "Every city has their safer and less safe places, which can also change at different times of the day (notably nighttime). What’s safe for one group can be different for another, i.e. for the gays. Some neighborhoods are just not as tolerant as others. Once again, a gay guide should know this, general[ly] because they live in the city and it applies to them, too. We know a thing or two about this in Paris." They add, "and [what if] you're not sure if your guide is the type of person to talk about backrooms and cruising." Sage advice for anyone thinking of going to the City of Lights. Read more here.

From Bali to Flores with Nomadic Boys (Indonesia travel video diary)

The Nomadic Boys (Stefan Arestis and Sebastien Chaneac) released this fun travel video diary of their recent trip to Indonesia. It features their favorite moments in Flores, Lombok, the Gilis and Bali islands.

Nomadic Boys had a terrific time and had this to share:
We started exploring the beautiful islands of the Komodo National Park, which has some beautiful secluded beaches, THE BEST scuba diving we have ever experienced and of course the famous Komodo Dragons.
On Lombok island we trekked up to the Rinjani volcano and enjoyed the rainforest jungle scenery in the Rinjani National Park, including the Sindang and Tiu Kelep Waterfalls. During our trek up the mountain we camped at the crater rim of the Rinjani volcano enjoying some spectacular views, particularly at sunset and sunrise.
The Gili Islands just off Lombok are great for relaxation, partying, scuba diving, snorkelling and trying subwing (at 1:57) - a new way to experience the underwater world.
Our favourite thing about travelling in Indonesia was the scuba diving. Diving in the Komodo National Park and around the Gili islands was just incredible! We saw reef sharks and turtles in almost every dive and at one stage in the Komodo National Park we saw 2 Moray Eels fighting.
Bali island is great for the gay bars in Seminyak. Ubud in the centre of the island is a great base to discover the Hindu culture of the island. We also did an excellent cooking course in Ubud learning to cook Indonesian classic dishes like sayur urap and jagung.
Who are Nomadic Boys?
Sebastien Chaneac grew up in Lyon, France. Eventually Sebastien moved to London UK where he became an IT geek. Stefan Arestis was born and raised in London, where the two men met. The gay couple share their travel adventures on their official site.

New York City has a ‘gayborhood’ for every taste

"New York City now has so many gayborhoods, it’s hard to keep track!"

Travel reporter Julia Steinecke writes:
"You pick the subculture you want to be part of when you go out,” explains Chris Frederick of NYC Pride. According to him, the “skinny, grungy” crowd goes to the East Village. The young professional “pretty boys” live and party in Hell’s Kitchen. If you’re 30 or over, Chelsea is the place.

Others tell me about Washington Heights and Inwood in Manhattan’s north end; Brooklyn’s Park Slope for lesbians and Fort Greene for black gay men; Jackson Heights in Queens for Latino gays.

In all these areas, small neighbourhood bars have replaced most of the big fabulous nightclubs of the past.

It’s a sign that LGBT New Yorkers have come a long way toward integrating into the larger society. While other American gays fight for anti-discrimination laws and domestic-partner recognition, New Yorkers, who already have some of those protections, go after full marriage and acceptance in the military.

Even the Museum of Sex skilfully integrates a considerable amount of information on multiple genders and orientations. The current exhibit on animal sexuality blows away the idea that any expression could be unnatural. READ MORE
