Sam Elliott shows off his hairy chest in the 1976 film, "Lifeguard"

I, like so many other gay men, have had a serious crush on Mr Elliott since he burst (bulged?) on the Hollywood scene back in the 1970's. The two Sam Elliott films that really made me stand up and take notice (yes, I am using a euphemism here) were: "Lifeguard" (1976) and "The Legacy" (1978). There's a great scene in "The Legacy" where Sam gets out of bed completely naked and we see him step into the shower. The scene continues as he lathers up his furry chest with soap. Woof! The look made waves on its own though it was Richard Gere’s Armani wardrobe in Paul Schrader’s American Gigolo (1980) that really cemented the designer’s place in Hollywood and properly introduced fashion to the concept of Hollywood dressing. For while Gere’s LA callboy Julian was endearing, the real publicity machine of the film was Gere himself. Armani got the hype potential. And though the film was costumed as a whole by Bernadene C. Mann, Gigolo itself was about Armani. Armani’s neutral toned, relaxed cuts framed a high flying LA lifestyle, but that was just the pretext. What was actually happening was branding in motion– on Gere, in Hollywood, on screen.

After three seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Julian Morris built a following with magnetic turns in horror fare like Cry Wolf (2005), Donkey Punch (2008) and cult-fave Sorority Row (2009). Though originally from England, he honed a foolproof American accent studying his Valkyrie (2007) co-star Tom Cruise.

Hot off a role on New Girl (2014-2015) and a return to the ABC Family teen drama Pretty Little Liars as Dr. Wren Kingston this year, just in time for that series’ sign-off, Morris appears to be making a clean break with less challenging roles, stunning in this summer’s British miniseries Man in an Orange Shirt as a gay man navigating empty hookup culture who discovers his grandfather was himself closeted — and had far more serious roadblocks to maneuver in the ‘40s.

Morris is currently playing Watergate lid-blower Bob Woodward in Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House, and will next be seen in a new film adaptation of Little Women.
