Russell Tovey Talks Art and Sexuality

Russell Tovey lands colorfully on the cover of the Attitude May 2021 issue. The out star of Looking and Years and Years reflects on queerness as a force for creation ahead of the release of his new book Talk Art: Everything You Wanted to Know About Contemporary Art But Were Afraid to Ask.

In the new issue Tovey shares what it was like working through his feelings of having a crush on a man:
"I was doing a TV show and I was desperately in love with this much older actor and had such a crush on him, and I didn’t think anyone knew", Russell recalls of coming to terms with his own sexuality. "I thought I was hiding it very well, but I wasn’t.

"This older actress took me for a walk along the beach where it was filming and explained to me that I might be gay. She said, 'If you are, that’s great; if you’re not, that’s fine. But you might be.' It felt like, oh, that’s an option. That is something I can possibly be. That’s what these feelings I’m having are."

Actor Ronen Rubinstein Comes Out

Ronen Rubinstein

Big congrats to actor Ronen Rubinstein of the hit television series 9-1-1: Lone Star. In his new interview with GIO Ronen reveals that he's part of the LGBTQ community!

Ronen plays the gay character of Tyler Kennedy "TK" Strand on the show. His character TK has been paired with out actor Rafael Silva's character, Carlos Reyes. Silva came out as gay in a July 2020 interview with Digital Spy. The couple are affectionately known to fans as Tarlos.

Ronen Rubinstein and Rafael Silva

When asked by GIO he if thinks playing gay roles may be detrimental to an actor's career, Rubinstein replies: "This question seems to imply that one is straight or an ally; however I identify as being part of the LGBTQIA+ Community. For me, playing T.K. has been cathartic and somewhat of an awakening. For the first time ever, I finally feel comfortable and truly free to express myself, both in my life and career. Representing a LGBTQIA+ character on television is an honor and privilege – and I would do it again in a heartbeat!"

Ronen Rubinstein and Rafael Silva have great chemistry as evidenced in the video below.

Freddie Mercury's Gay Life in NYC

Did Freddie Mercury have a secret and long forgotten gay past in New York City? Thor Arnold and Lee Nolan's new book, "Freddie Mercury in New York: Don’t Stop Us Now!" gives us a glimpse into Mercury's life during the time period 1980 - 1984 which was skipped over in the 2018 biopic, "Bohemian Rhapsody".

The authors share:
At that time, many of New York City’s residents and day-trippers from Long Island and New Jersey knew Queen’s music but could not identify the band members. Freddie felt free and absolutely cherished this newly found and so-unavailable-in-Europe nonrecognition. He had recently grown a mustache, cut his hair short, wore jeans and tee shirts, and blended in perfectly with the gay culture in New York—we mostly all looked alike! Freddie loved being just “one of the boys.”
Lee Nolan documented this time in Mercury's life with many never before published photos. Freddie is said to have told Lee on their last visit in June 1991, “make these photos work for you, darling!”

Man With The Answers, Tom Felton, Pritty, Ang Lee, Steven Silver, International Queer Cinema & MORE!

Scene from "O Fantasma"

International Gay Cinema: 25 LGBTQ Movies To See From Around The World American movies and TV are making major strides in LGBTQ representation, but storytellers abroad are in many ways ahead of the curve, exploring sexuality and relationships with groundbreaking technique, and in ways often coded and ahead of their time. From Fassbinder to Pasolini and Sciamma, here are some of the best gay movies from the global arthouse, often bracing in how they freely bust taboos.

Movie: Brokeback Mountain

Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal

On This Gay Day: Ang Lee Receives Best Director Oscar For ‘Brokeback Mountain’ The film had been nominated for 8 awards including Best Picture, Best Actor for Heath Ledger, Best Supporting Actor by Jake Gyllenhaal, and Best Supporting Actress for Michelle Williams. The film is based on a short story by author E. Annie Proulx which was published in 1997. It's the love story of two closeted cowboys spending time together tending cattle and their subsequent lives. When the film came out in late 2005 it was a huge commercial and critical success. The film sparked discussion about whether the characters should be described as straight, gay or bisexual. In an interview with Details magazine Gyllenhaal said he considered the characters to be two straight men who fell in love.

Movie: The Obituary of Tunde Johnson

The Obituary of Tunde Johnson

Film Review: ‘The Obituary of Tunde Johnson’ Combines Black Lives Matter Themes With The Evolving Time Loop Genre Ali LeRoi’s new film has a tightrope walk of a premise. Tunde, a gay African American teenager, is trapped in a time loop that always ends with him dying at the hands of the police. It’s a tricky balance, combining this popcorn movie conceit with a serious social issue, but the film mostly pulls it off. It’s anchored by a strong performance from Steven Silver, an up-and-coming actor from Netflix’s ‘13 Reasons Why’. As Tunde, Silver commits entirely as the narrative moves from high school soap opera to forbidden love story to coming-out drama to police brutality suspense to sci-fi mystery.

WATCH: 'The Obituary of Tunde Johnson' Trailer

Movie: The Man with the Answers

Synopsis: A former Greek diving champion and an eccentric German student take an adventurous road-trip of rediscovery from Bari to Bavaria. Directed by Stelios Kammitsis. Starring: Vasilis Magouliotis, Anton Weil and Stella Fyrogeni.

'Pritty' Is the Animated Queer Coming-of-Age Film We Need in Our Lives Directed by poet and filmmaker Terrance Daye and based on the novel of the same name by author and collaborator Keith F. Miller, Jr., Pritty: The Animation tells the story of a teenager named Jay who is trying new things, stepping out of his familiar, safe, comfort zone, and learning to swim with the help of a handsome new friend named Justin.

MOVIE: Braking for Whales

Tom Felton and Tammin Sursok

Synopsis: A dysfunctional gay brother(Tom Felton) and sister (Tammin Sursok) are forced to come to terms with each other and themselves over their recently deceased mother's final wish. Directed by Sean McEwen.

He Didn't Want Me

Kisos - He Didn't Want Me

I was deeply moved the first time I heard the song "He Didn't Want Me" by Kisos. I confess I was a bit surprised at my emotional reaction by the time he sings:
I forced something that wasn’t there
Ignored the signs you didn’t care
Cuz when you kissed me I believed it
Until you met me at the park
Looked in my eyes blew out the spark
Admitted that you’d never feel it
When the song ended I was in a puddle of tears. "Cuz when you kissed me I believed it" gets me every time. The power of music can make us happy, sad or both all at once.

Kisos reveals, "He Didn't Want Me is the acceptance stage of grief, and because it's so depressing sonically, I wanted the music video to balance that with an ethereal metamorphosis and ritual of communal love. I hope you feel transformed along with me".

Enjoy the two music videos below. One is the acoustic version and the other is the official music video. Be sure to visit Kisos website here.

Michael Hamm Talks Cosplay

Michael Hamm

Cosplay is like Halloween but better because you can dress up whenever you want and not have to wait for that one day a year to let your freak flag fly. Cosplayers are completely devoted to the craft and put so much time, effort and money into their costumes. I love how creative cosplayers can be. Exhibit A: the pic above is Michael Hamm as Aquaman!

Gayming Magazine's Michael Therkelsen writes:
One of the topics that is rarely discussed... is the sub-culture of cosplaying. This is intriguing to me. When it comes to drag performers, we scream “YAS QWEEN!” to the high heavens, but when it comes to dressing up as video game characters, we seem to show little interest. I want to change this by highlighting some of the best and most talented cosplayers on the internet; especially ones that openly embrace their own queer identity. Let me start with Michael Hamm.

Michael Hamm

Hamm is one of the most recognizable cosplayers with his muscular physique and flair. He's appeared at dozens of comic cons over the years and his social media presence grows every month.

Check out the two videos below to learn how Hamm discovered cosplay and how he keeps his abs in shape!

Review: How Does Tyler Hoechlin Measure Up as TV's New Superman?

Superman & Lois stars the handsome and hunky Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf) and Elizabeth Tulloch (Grimm). The set-up for the drama has Clark Kent and Lois Lane returning to Smallville. They are now the parents of two sons Jonathan (played by Jordan Elsass) and Jordan (played by Alex Garfin) and we see how the couple deal with all the stress that comes with being working parents.

I've not seen the show yet and most likely would only check it out because of Tyler Hoechlin (I can be shallow like that. Ha!)

Glorious, Glamourous and Gritty: Our Enduring Queer Culture

Gladys Bentley

I think it's safe to say that we need more books written and more documentary films made about LGBTQ community luminaries. The question is who will be motivated and compensated to contribute to the historical record.

In recent years there have been some fine documentaries, such as David France's 2017, The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson.  A pioneer in the early LGBTQ rights movement, Johnson's death in 1992 was a shock. Was her death an accident, murder or suicide? With queer media in its infancy at the time, her death barely registered a blip with national mainstream news outlets.

I would love to see a book and/or documentary about jazz performer, Gladys Bentley, who I have previously posted about. Bentley was a rarity in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920's - she was openly lesbian and an early drag king. She tried to get to Broadway but her raunchy performances caused a ruffle with the law and some were shut down. Sadly, later in her life, it seems Bentley was subjected to a form of conversion therapy as a means to 'get straight'.

Thankfully, in the 21st century, our somewhat more robust LGBTQ media presence has provided a platform to discover and champion these nearly forgotten figures from our gay past.

Who would you like to see have their life and career documented?

WATCH
Gladys Bentley perform on "You Bet Your Life" in May of 1958 with host, Groucho Marx.

That's Black Entertainment!

Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte, in a scene from Carmen Jones (1954)

What better way to end Black History Month than a celebration (via TCM) of song and dance from Hollywood's most iconic Black performers of the 1940s-1950s. None of the great stars in this video were openly gay or lesbian back in those days almost everyone was in the closet but a few were known to be "in the life".

It's been said many times that all the great show singers were gay or bisexual:
Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Alberta Hunter, Ethel Waters, Josephine Baker, all of them. The men in their professional lives, such as producers, were sexually demanding but showed no tenderness, and the showgirls roomed together. They risked being mocked as “bulldaggers,” but lesbianism was so common in that era it was almost accepted: for gay men, it was far, far worse.
As we dig through the historical archives it's important to embrace our queer kin but respect that many, if they were alive today, still might not identify as LGBTQ because of the rigid values thrusted upon them by a very judgmental society. Enjoy the video below!

The performers featured in this compilation clip are:

Pearl Bailey, Max Roach, Lena Horne, Hazel Scott, Josephine Baker, Fats Waller, Zutty Singleton, Ella Fitzgerald, John W. Bubbles, Louis Armstrong, Bill Robinson, Ethel Waters, Dorothy Dandridge, Nicholas Brothers.

The Movies Featured Are:
Siren of the Tropics (1927)
I Dood It (1943)
Stormy Weather (1943)
Cabin In The Sky (1943)
Words & Music (1948)
High Society (1954)
Carmen Jones (1954)
Pete Kelly's Blues (1955)

Clarence Muse: A History Making, Unsung Talent In Hollywood

Clarence Muse

I enjoy documentaries about talented figures lost to history. Actor-writer Clarence Muse is one such remarkable fellow.

TCM has a great docu-video (see below) where they cover much of his career. "With more than 150 credits to his name, Clarence Muse left behind an extensive and impressive body of work in Hollywood and in independent pictures. He made history with his leading role in the first all-Black talkie, Hearts in Dixie (1929). Nevertheless, being a Black man in Hollywood meant that his talents were relegated to miniscule, often uncredited roles as servants, porters, butlers and chauffeurs."

As far as I know, Clarence Muse was not part of the LGBT family, but he did make Hollywood history by co-writing the screenplay of "Way Down South" with gay poet Langston Hughes. It was a first, two Black male writers getting co-screenplay credit. In 1939!

You can enjoy Way Down South on YouTube.
