LGBTQ Characters Inclusion In Comics Improves
DC launched new Green Lantern series Far Sector, with queer Black woman Sojourner Mullein in the lead role, while also doubling-down on making Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, non-straight. Marvel revealed both Kitty Pryde and Star-Lord were bisexual, launched a new volume of mutant super-team X-Factor where at least half the members are LGBTQ+, and had a gay couple, Hulkling and Wiccan, anchor the summer’s big crossover event, Empyre – which featured the central characters getting married twice. “David’s not gay, he’s pan,” my 8-year-old said to me. “Thank you for the correction,” I said. Pansexual was not a term I grew up with in the '70s and '80s; sometimes I have to be reminded. But my 8- and 11-year-old kids don’t, and not just because they are steeped in LGBTQ terminology, and close to LGBTQ members of our own family, but because, as a family, we watch Schitt’s Creek. Actor Stanley Tucci On Straight Actors Playing Gay Roles
Now, I think that the problem here is that one of the reasons that gay actors have not played gay roles is that a lot of gay actors weren’t able to come out and be openly gay for so long, not just in society but in Hollywood. And that’s where we need to get to. There was this, “You were either typecast or you weren’t cast.” More.
