Mahershala Ali took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Moonlight at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday night. "It's not about you. You are in service to these these characters,” he said during his acceptance speech. Ali, 43, earned the nod for his portrayal of Juan, a Cuban-born drug dealer in Miami who becomes a father figure to the bullied child of a drug addict. The intimate coming-of-age drama earned near unanimous praise for its impeccable ensemble and cinematic artistry. This is Ali’s first Academy Award nomination and award. According to Mic, Ali is the first Ahmadi Muslim to win an Oscar.
