Olympic silver medallist Alexandre Despatie was named to Canada's diving team for the 2008 Beijing Games after satisfying a panel of judges that his broken foot is sufficiently healed. "The timing was horrible," Despatie said of the injury before the evaluation that would decide if he went to Beijing or not. "It was tough, mentally and physically, to stay fit and come back, but I have no doubt that I'll be ready for the Olympics."
Despatie — a three-time world champion who captured silver in the three-metre springboard at the 2004 Athens Games — said he knew he was healthy enough to pass the test. ''Honestly, I was confident that we would meet the conditions set by Diving Canada,'' said Despatie, 23. ''I've been diving well since I've recovered from my injury. We are currently putting all our efforts towards performing to the utmost of our abilities at the Olympics."
Despatie is hoping for some tough competition in Beijing. He knows how to deal with pressure and he proved that when he won a Commonwealth gold medal with perfect 10s at age 13. "It is going to be a war," Despatie said. "We're all going there to win, we're all going there to be the best and it's going to happen on that day. It's going to be really exciting and it's going to be great and it's going to be huge."
