Queer Grammys, Homophobic Egging Attacks, Callum Scott Howells, NYC Gay Bar Killer, Neil Patrick Harris, Jack'd & MORE!

Eliot Hastie

MORE Victims of 'Homophobic' Egging Attacks Come Forward After Sydney Mardi Gras  Juliano Monteiro, 30, told the ABC television network that eggs were thrown in his face while he was waiting for a ride-share car on Macleay Street in Potts Point about 3:20am. Eliot Hastie (pictured above) said he was the victim of a similar attack on Little Riley Street in Surry Hills about 5:00am. "You could hear them coming," he said. "Out of nowhere these things were flying at our faces and bodies." ABC crime reporter Mark Reddie says he was attacked between 3:00am and 4:00am on Sunday while walking home along Riley Street in Surry Hills. Reddie made an official police complaint on Monday. And he said he has been contacted by others with similar stories of being egged by men driving a red car.

Clement Beaune

Out French European Affairs Minister Clement Beaune Met with LGBTQ Activists in Warsaw 'The State of LGBT Rights in Poland is Worrying'
LGBT rights have become a flashpoint issue in Poland in recent years under the populist Law and Justice (PiS) party government, which campaigns against what it calls “LGBT ideology” and likens it to communism. With support from the government, several regions have declared themselves free from “LGBT ideology” in a protest against support for gay rights from Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, an opposition leader. “I have not come to give lessons, but there is a worrying situation and my meetings have confirmed this,” said Beaune. He also stated that he was advised against his plan to visit one of Poland’s “LGBT-ideology free zones”.

Kaytranada, Phoebe Bridgers, CHIKA

A Record 3 Openly LGBTQ Artists Are Vying for Best New Artist at 2021 Grammys Of the eight Grammy nominees for best new artist, three -- CHIKA, Kaytranada and Phoebe Bridgers -- openly identify as LGBTQ. (A fourth nominee, Doja Cat, has made mixed comments on the subject). Having three openly LGBTQ nominees for best new artist in one year constitutes a record. Six years ago, two best new artist nominees -- Brandy Clark and Sam Smith -- were openly LGBTQ. Smith, who identifies as non-binary, won. Eight years ago, the nominees included Frank Ocean and Alabama Shakes, fronted by Brittany Howard, who came out not long after. The experiences of Ocean and Smith are especially instructive. Both made their public announcements just as their first albums were being released, as if to establish, right from the outset of their careers, who they are.

Lilly Wachowski, who is best known for the original groundbreaking Matrix franchise, is teaming with IP incubator OTV Studio as a key partner in their work to create career paths for intersectional film and television creatives. Every artist under the OTV Studio umbrella are intersectional, meaning they hold more than one historically marginalized identity. “As a queer trans woman, I am acutely aware of the multitude of forces seen and unseen that have kept me on this Earth,” said Wachowski. “The folks that kept me afloat with their support and love. The artists that inspired me and the women, queer and trans folks that carved out paths that I could follow. I want to be that for other folks: trans and non binary folks, queer folks, Black and Brown folks.”

Jack'd the Gay Dating App Sent an 'All Waves Matter' Notification How Was This Approved? Queer dating app Jack'd came under fire on Monday night after the app sent users a notification reading "All Waves Matter," referencing the virtual "waves" users send to express interest in another user. Being an app that prides itself on being the "most diverse community for gay, bi, trans, and queer people," as their website says, the notification's sentiment didn't sit right with many of its users. While Jack'd is overwhelmingly used by people of color, the notification seemingly alluded to "All Lives Matter," the rallying cry used by those who do not agree with the Black Lives Matter movement. The controversy comes as the gay community grapples with issues of racism that have frequently played out on dating apps.

Callum Scott Howells

Stars of Hit TV Series "It’s a Sin" Actors Callum Scott Howells and Neil Patrick Harris Relfect On Its Huge Impact With a storyline set during the harrowing early days of the AIDS pandemic, the cast of It’s a Sin is experiencing the show’s acclaim through the lens of another global health crisis. Unsparing in its depiction of the hostility and isolation AIDS sufferers endured under Margaret Thatcher’s Tory government, the 5-part miniseries is a testament not only to the human condition’s fragility, but also its strength in the face of such uncertainty. For 21-year-old Welsh actor Callum Scott Howells, who plays Colin Morris Jones in the series, the impact of the current pandemic includes giving interviews from the attic bedroom of his child hometown of Tonyrefail, including one with his It’s a Sin castmate, Tony award-winning actor Neil Patrick Harris. Here, the co-stars reminisce on filming pre-pandemic, the show’s lasting impact, and a mutual fan named Elton John. Read interview here.

Elon Green

Last Call: Behind The Terrifying Untold Story of New York's Gay Bar Killer In a new book, journalist Elon Green explores the under-reported stories of gay men brutally murdered by a killer who evaded justice for a decade. While LGBTQ people may still be at considerably elevated risk for violence, the level of peril and contempt was far higher in the late 80s and early 90s, when the bulk of the book takes place. Worse, that period represented the height of ignorance and fear about Aids, as well as the peak death toll in the gay community in the west, greatly impacting how the community was viewed. “Aids took what was, at best, a level of indifference towards gay people and turned it into revulsion,” said Green.

Shane Vaughn, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Right-Wing Pastor Shane Vaughn Calls Meghan Markle a “Jezebel” and a “Narcissist”  Vaughn, a pastor of First Harvest Ministries in Waveland, Mississippi, posted a video on his YouTube channel Monday night in which he called Meghan Markle a “Jezebel” and a “narcissist” who is trying to destroy the British royal family. Vaughn was responding to the recent interview Prince Harry and Markle gave to Oprah Winfrey in which Markle discussed her experiences with racism as a member of the royal family and her thoughts of suicide during her pregnancy. Vaughn was entirely unsympathetic, comparing Prince Harry to King Solomon, whose kingdom was destroyed because his wives corrupted him, according to the Bible.
