Fredericton holds 1st pride parade!

"Fredericton's first gay pride parade went off smoothly Sunday, a stark contrast from the reluctant reception gay rights activists got when they initiated pride events 12 years ago."

(Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada) Several hundred people — young and old; straight and gay — gathered along a riverfront walking trail to take part in a historic milestone for New Brunswick's capital city. Mayor Brad Woodside, once threw up roadblocks to Fredericton's gay community. The long-time mayor, currently in his seventh term, refused to read a gay pride week proclamation in the council chambers in 1995. When the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission forced him to read it in 1998, he mumbled it in such a low voice that nobody in the council chambers could hear him. He apologized the following week and has read the proclamation every year since then. READ MORE
