The Self-Mollification of the Obama Era

"Remember back in 2008, when Barack Obama won the election? It seemed like that nation was embarking on a new day: water would be turned into wine, lollipops would fall from the sky. Democrats and progressives celebrated the end of the Bush administration, and all seemed grand," writes Andrew Belonsky, "But that was also the day Californians approved Proposition 8, a fact that sullied the day. Since then, we gays have intensified our fight for gay marriage, and whenever we’re down about consistent oppression, we say to ourselves, Well, at least Obama’s better than Bush. That’s not the best sentiment. In fact, it’s dangerous."
