"Brendan Burke [pictured to the left of his father, Brian], 21, was fatally injured in a two-vehicle collision in snowy conditions in Indiana," reports the CBC. "A passenger in Burke's car, Mark Reedy, 18, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., also died at the scene of the afternoon crash, the Palladium-Item newspaper in Richmond, Ind., reported. The Maple Leafs organization released the following statement after the team's game Friday in New Jersey: "We are saddened to report that Brendan Burke, the youngest son of Leafs president and general manager Brian Burke succumbed to injuries he suffered in an auto accident earlier today in Indiana. The family asks for privacy at this difficult time."
Brendan Burke, the son of Brian Burke, the President and GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs, came out publicly as a gay man last fall. Brendan spoke eloquently about coming out and the challenges that still exist for gay athletes.
So young and with his whole life ahead of him. Tragic.
RIP.
